ABSTRACT
3 A wireless sensor network adopting the ultrasonic detectors and a lateral scanning method is
4 developed to measure the traffic volume on the multiple lanes of a roadway. Unlike the existing
5 ultrasonic sensor systems, the proposed system can be easily installed and maintained in various
6 roadway/traffic environment. Further, the system can be configured in different ways depending
7 on the number of lanes to be covered. The field experimentation in a real roadway showed
8 promising results with low detection error.
